VINEYARDS

Shell limestone. Old vines. Silvaner.

When selecting our vineyards, we attach great value to sparse, skeleton-rich soil - best planted with old vines (especially regarding Silvaner). We are working without machines as far as possible when caring for our grapevines, only with neat, knowledgeable manual work.

The name of this VDP.GROSSE LAGE® is derived from an ancient legend, which says that the souls of the winemakers went up to heaven here (Himmelspfad means path of heaven). It is the hottest part of the Langenberg in Retzstadt and is directly facing south. The old walls in the vineyards are storing futher heat. Outstanding is also the gradient of 65%, which causes many challenges in the care of the vines. The here located Silvaner with his massive, old grapevines has already been planted almost 60 years ago.

ROTHLAUF is the most prominent part of the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Thüngersheimer Johannisberg. The name stems from a stripe of red sandstone, which is running trough the lower shell limestone. The soil is very barren and fine-pored, which is causing an outstanding minerality. The vineyards, with a gradient of up to 70%, are oriented towards south to southwest.

In one of the most beautiful side valleys of the river Main, situated in the north of Würzburg, you find the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Langenberg. It is characterized by the really sparse and fast warming shell limestone soil, which is facing Southwest to Southeast. The vineyards are protected by a forest on the mountaintop. Over 300 years ago you could already find winegrowing in this site.

The name of this VDP.ERSTE LAGE® refers to an old shepard's trail (Schäfer means shepard), which ran trough this site. The skeleton-rich shell limestone soil and the protection by in the north situated forestation offer great conditions for unique wines. Furthermore the valley cools down in the night and heatens up really fast over the day. This temperature difference develops a variety of flavours in the products. The orientation towards south to southeast contributes also to the fact, that these vineyards rank among the best in Langenberg. The gradient is 30 - 40%.

This excellent VDP.ERSTE LAGE® is located in the north of Würzburg in the valley of the river Main, between the VDP.GROSSE LAGEN® ROTHLAUF in Thüngersheim and STEIN in Stetten. Particularly striking is the rock drop-off, which shows the pure, lower shell limestone, the "Wellenkalk". Paired with the alignment to south and southwest and the gradient of 25 - 60%, these conditions cause an unique, independent character.

On the level of the VDP.GROSSE LAGE® STEIN in Stetten, the valley of the river Main is limited by vertical foam banks of shell limestone. Above and westwards of the STEIN beginns the VDP.ERSTE LAGE® Rossthalberg. The climate is characterized by air masses, which rise due to natural thermics all the way up along the rocks. The vineyards are protected by forests on the mountain top. The vines are standing on weather-beaten shell limestone, which lies shallow on the ground. The skeleton-rich soil makes it difficult for the vines to build deep roots.
